On Wednesday, April 6, 2011 Oakridge School was one of eight schools in Utah recognized with a 2011 Community of Caring Innovations in Social Emotional Learning and Character Education Award. The Awards Ceremony was held at the University of Utah Alumni House in Salt Lake City. Those attending the award ceremony from Nebo School District were Dr. Richard Kay, principal of Oakridge School, Mike Murray, Supervisor of Special Education and Noel Carlton, parent of student at Oakridge School.
The Eunice Kennedy Schriver National Center for Community of Caring recognized the schools for their innovations in character education practices. An “Innovation in Character Education” is an innovative strategy, activity or project that a school has modeled or created to further character education in the lives of students. This is not a nomination or special recognition for an individual, but rather the “Best Practice”. Schools were chosen on the basis of a written nomination explaining how that school uses character education initiatives.
